The 2026 Munich Security Conference produced an unusual head-to-head on February 16, as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Secretary of State Marco Rubio presented sharply competing visions of American foreign policy on the same stage, days apart.

The conference unfolded against the backdrop of reported US military planning for possible strikes on Iran. CBS News has reported that President Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago in December that the United States would back Israeli strikes on Iran's ballistic missile program if a deal could not be reached.

The Iran Question Looms Over Everything

Senator Lindsey Graham, also in Munich, framed the stakes in stark terms: "If we back out now, it'll be the biggest mistake we've made, far worse than the Syrian red line, far worse than Afghanistan." Progressive lawmakers pushed back, warning that another Middle East war would dominate a presidency already stretched thin.

Diplomats at the conference described an unusual level of uncertainty about the next move. The gap between Washington's ultimatum and Tehran's position has rarely been wider.
